Jan Bons (b.1918) belongs to the generation of Willem Sandberg, Otto Treumann, Dick Elffers and Wim Brusse. Dutch designers who, in the years immediately preceding the war, were educated partly ar the Hague Art Academy and partly at the renowned 'New Art School' of Paul Citroen, which gave them a profound insight into the ideology of the Bauhaus.
Unlike the pioneers of the new typography (Piet Zwart, Gerrit Kiljan & Paul Schuitema) both Dick Elffers & Jan Bons soon abandoned photo-montage and photo-typography as the only true means of visual expression. For Bons this decision led to the use of a broad palette and the liberation of the letter from its typographical forms and boundaries. Even today (he is now 87 and still working) the lettering on his posters is usually an integral aspect of the overall design which he draws with the same pencil he uses for the illustration.
