Armando
Painter, draughtsman, sculptor, poet/writer, filmmaker and musician Armando(pseudonym for Herman Dirk van Dodeweerd, born 18 September 1929 in Amsterdam) is a multi-talented artist whose exceptional and richly variegated work shows an extremely adventurous spirit, driven by a 'Trieb', a compulsion to which he has to submit. Over a period of more than fifty years he has built up an impressive oeuvre with a penetrating theme: human tragedy. All of his work comes forth out of the observation of reality.
The young Armando belonged to the first post-war generation - a pessimistic and anti-bourgeois generation. He developed an individual style in which he sought to translate his personal experiences as objectively as possible into images, text and music. The paintings from this period are anti-aesthetic with aggressive, heavily applied layers of paint, predominantly black & red. Over the years, the figures have become less menacing and aggressive; he visualizes the existential melancholy.
There is a permanent museum for his work in Amersfoort, the Netherlands.
