Gerrit Benner (1897-1981) holds a unique position in Dutch twentieth century art and he was a loner who refused to join any group of artists. He was a hard worker who sought his own way in the art world. The paintings in this book show that individualism in all its facets; his close bond with (the Friesian) nature translated into landscapes, figures, riders and horses in wonderful primary colours, in a unique style which is powerful, simple and very expressionistic. Benner managed to retain simplicity and wonderment in his work, although he went on developing far into old age.
