The Gutenberg Galaxie series is part of the prestigious Gutenberg Prize which is awarded each year to an outstanding graphic designer by the city of Leipzig, Germany. The book project is under the editorial guidance of the Institut für Buchkunst and functions as an educational tool for the students of the Institut. The winner of the prize has the function of being a surpervisor over their own monograph.
Irma Boom, one of the Netherlands most outstanding and influential book designers, has been honoured with a book which mirrors her style excellently. The interior of the book is kaleidoscopic showing various aspects of her most important publications and discusses her techniques and ideas. The ingenious binding, which she designed herself, is made up of two book-blocks which are attached to each other and can fold over making a double layered book which can then be read from front to back or back to front. The German text begins at the front and the English at the back.
