Published on the occasion of an exhibition in Ravensburg, Germany in 2003 this collection of pen and ink drawings and watercolors by Marlene Dumas presents a painter who does not see herself as a stylist but as a sensualist who knows how to orientate her senses not only towards lines and colors, but towards nuances of sound and of the meaning of language as well.
The concept of beauty has always comprised the question of erotic stimulation and Marlene Dumas takes up this concept with a consistency and radicalness like no painter before her. She calls her work with watercolors "an irresponsible affair", thus addressing their beguiling lightness, their seductive charm and their aroused intimacy.
